Old Friend 03:46
My dear old friend, we’re older by the day But when I see your beaming face it all feels just the same As it did when I was nineteen, you were twenty-one The bats flew over Carlton skies Our lives had just begun Twelve doors down from your house to mine And every week on Brunswick Street we’d dance into the night And I was kind of scared, you were wild and free You told me I could be myself, it took a while for me Chorus: As we grow older will you let me know you And I will try to let you know me too If friends were flowers with magical powers You know I’d try to pick a bunch like you Ten years on, how the time has flown I don’t see you as often now, but through it all we’ve grown Like the lilies in the undergrowth, and marigolds so bold We’ll shiver through the chilly winds and onto the sun we’ll hold Chorus
2.
We’re making a map of all the places that we’ve been Long before I knew you and you knew me We could’ve brushed by one another in this scene So many times before Then one night in the light of the dancehall stage The art you made put a giggle on my face Chorus: I wanna hold your hand in the street In all the streets I wanna hold your hand in the street From over the seas we shared a story every day And every phone call made you seem less far away We didn’t know it but we knew this was a thing That we could hold onto Just as Melbourne winter was settling in The Tuscan sun was so warm on my skin Chorus Maybe one day we will have a fight But I know we will talk it out and try to set things right For you are here and I am here for the long haul And everywhere I go I feel a humming in my soul Chorus
3.
To Be Steady 03:52
As clouds gather on the sky I want to dive into the blue Swim till I don’t have to try My shoulders wide, my rhythm true Chorus: To be steady is not enough You must fall in, you must fall off Just remember you’re not that tough Learning to swim when the sea is rough Sleepy early morning frost All is not lost, there’s much to do And there is always an aching cost Of pushing on, of pushing through Chorus We used to amble to the sand Salt hair in strands, from your front door Remembering when you held my hand In this far land I miss you more As clouds gather on the sky I want to dive into the blue Swim till I don’t have to try My shoulders wide, my rhythm true Chorus
4.
Cold Winds 04:00
Nothing could surprise us tonight You told me of your soul burning bright Echoing the moon glow And how everything is real You told me when the fear froze you still Voices in your head loud and shrill And everything you’re saying I remember how it feels When I got home I wrote a song As tears rolled down my face Chorus: Let the cold winds blow right through your aching bones It’s so hard being out here on your own Looking back, you’ll see where you have fallen is where you’ve grown Let the cold winds blow right through your aching bones If I could take this old pain away Like cold water fades a stain I’d try to make it better But so many turn away The weight of the world is on your back It can be so lonely on this track Some will understand you Some will see you as a stray And some will walk with you a while And help you see the stars Chorus Stigma lifts when we give the gift Of speaking from the heart Let the cold winds blow right through your aching bones It’s so hard being out here on your own Looking back, you’ll see where we have fallen is where we’ve grown Let the cold winds blow right through your aching bones

Speak Soon 04:07
I woke and I wandered the shell-studded shoreline And into my heart whispered words that you wrote: “Don’t worry, there isn’t that long to go, Don’t cry, I’ll see you soon” For years our love had been almost forgotten But I kept your old letters in a box by my bed And in my dreams I’d reopen them all My heart danced around when you said Speak soon, I hope that you’re well Speak soon, I love you and hope you can tell That if I could, I would be there I would I’d be on the next plane till together we stood Speak soon Back when Melbourne was a bright shiny beacon I used to call you each week from the West Now we don’t talk that much anymore The tide washed us clean for the best Ten long years now I’ve lived in this city And still I am learning how to love and be loved I know that I’ve hurt you and it can’t be undone You fairly called my bluff Speak soon, I hope that you’re well Speak soon, I’m sorry and I miss you as well As time carries on, I know you’ll be strong I hope to be seeing you around before long Speak soon
6.
Broadbeans 03:47
I woke up early, put a jacket on I read the news and sang some love songs Somehow what I’m writing comes out wrong Some words don’t belong I’ll boil the kettle, just enough for me I’ll drown my sorrows in a strong black tea My love got up for work at half past four Headed straight out the door Chorus: Hello, I called you just to see how you’ve been I’m sure you’re just busy, that’s how it seems So now, I’m on the porch just shelling broadbeans Broadbeans, broadbeans There’s so much I should and should not do My to-do lists only make me blue Collecting kindling for the fire Just enough to warm this tired heart of mine In everything I try to do and make If I fail, I feel my life’s at stake Talking with you calms my mind The silver linings that you find Chorus The city life is tiring The rushing and desiring of just a bit more time Though I don’t miss the traffic I miss our silly antics I hope this tree change doesn’t come between us Chorus
7.
You took me in under your arm You told me you loved me so More than I could ever know I wasn’t the only one But it had to be this way Just to make you stay Chorus: I held on through the games you played Till all I had was you And heart by heart you found your way Making up that twisted truth You felt my fall, you heard my call You kept running anyway Now you’re blended into the broken light of day Someone’s laughing in the shadows Her lips are stained with wine Her eyes are soft and kind You’re leaning into all her secrets Is it wrong or is it fine I’ve loved you all this time Chorus
8.
The Basket 02:26
Let us sit and be as one And give our thanks for the trees and sun Through light and leaves the air we breathe is crafted The most important things we know Were felt by people long ago The past and present weave us like a basket Over and under and through again Strands of green glimmer with the old Will it take the weight Of everything we want to hold? Let us sit in wonderment At greed becoming common sense To get ahead is our responsibility We are taught to tow the line That this is just the daily grind That caring is just a liability Who decides the future of this weary world? Men in suits sip coffee in their high rise buildings Fooling no one Till it’s all gone and we forgot our songs So let us sit and be as one And give our thanks for the trees and sun And to heal the gloom upon our souls May we sing it out in all the words we know In one another’s tunes we’ll find the gold
9.
You tell me you talk too much But I don’t reckon that you do Not like the characters in kids’ cartoons I like to hear of your adventures You tell me you’re heavier Than you were last year And when I look your eyes are full of tears You say your body is a prison The lady on the billboard seems to have it all But we all know that she is pinned against the wall Broken and beautiful Broken and beautiful You tell me you cannot sing But I know you have sung before So come on out from all these padlocked doors And let’s go dancing ’round the footpath You tell me you’re getting old That you’re forgetting lots of things So now it’s time to open up your wings And marvel at the crazy colours The lady on the billboard seems to have it all But we all know that she is pinned against the wall The big guys all are trading on our broken souls Broken and beautiful Broken and beautiful
10.
Feel It All 04:16
When you were a little one, I used to take my friends To wave to you through the kindergarten fence After school you’d be munching on a carrot Making castles of shells and songs for your teddy bear Melodies shone from somewhere deep inside you And your voice was clear and strong Chorus: You know how to be who you are You always have, you always have You’ve always known there’s sadness in the stars And beauty in the darkness To feel it all means everything When you were six our family hit the road To do what we did best, sing our harmonies so strong Soon enough you wrote songs of your own And you spent your busking money on colourful clothes There were tears and fights, Long drives and red-eye flights But you were never scared of the blinding stage lights Chorus The teddy bear now sits on a shelf out of the way And the coloured clothes have changed to black and grey A river of songs flows through you all the same Dip your hand under the surface, don’t let them run away Chorus

about

Winner of "Best Folk Work" at the 2023 Music Victoria Awards, Lucy Wise's fourth album, “Into the Blue” reflects the freedom Lucy feels with music. Ranging from live-recorded solo vocals and guitar, to epic strings, percussion, brass and backing vocals, this new body of work speaks about human feeling with wholeheartedness and a sense of adventure.

The album and its upcoming B-side EP, “Yearning” comprise songs Lucy has written over the past five years. In this body of work, Lucy writes and sings about the often-untouched universals – those things we’re often not allowed to feel and explore in the daily grind. Singing her songs openly, Lucy creates a space to reflect on the things that matter the most to us.

The songs on “Into the Blue” touch on themes Lucy hasn’t explored before, including body image, queer love, mental illness and recovery, moving from city to rural life, and the ways we can grow through old friendships. Having continued to hone her craft through the pandemic, Lucy has re-remerged into performing and music-making with a stronger sense of connection, identity and purpose.

The album was produced by Tasmanian producer Luke Plumb over twelve months between 2021 and 2022. Lucy and Luke’s recording sessions were a calm, creative haven amongst the whirlwind of returning to life as touring musicians, and the album celebrates the rich musical world they both inhabit. Featuring fifteen guest musicians, this album is like walking past crowded marquees at a festival, and hearing a colourful unfurling of so many different sounds. With every new listen, there’s more to be discovered.
