I wish I was in Boston or some other seaport town I’d set my foot on a steamboat, I’d sail the ocean round While sailing ’cross the ocean, while sailing ’cross the sea I’d think of Handsome Molly wherever she might be She rode to church on Sunday, she passed me on by I saw her mind was changing by the roving of her eye Do you remember Molly, when you gave me your right hand You said if ever you’d marry that I’d be your man Well now you’ve broke your promise, go home with who you please While my poor heart is aching here lying at your ease Hair as black as a raven, her eyes were black as coal Her cheeks were like the lilies out in the morning grown I wish I was in Boston or some other seaport town I’d set my foot on a steamboat, I’d sail the ocean round While sailing ’cross the ocean, sailing ’cross the sea I’d think of Handsome Molly wherever she might be

Billowing, billowing sheets on the sill You were bright as a button, smoother than silk High and low, I will go wandering far And I’ll spare a thought for all that you are Your fire was catching, your need for unlatching Was clear as a glass in the sun You take your time with each sip of wine Until time for going is gone Flickering, flickering sky in the trees And songs of the ocean that you sang to me Weathering, weathering world spins around With all we’ve forgotten and all that we’ve found As cold as a shoulder, as big as a boulder The heartache went on for so long You say you’re fine with each sip of wine But I feel time for going is strong I let go of your hand, now I walk on without you I heard that you’ve landed back where I found you Billowing, billowing sheets on the sill You were bright as a button, smoother than silk High and low, I will go wandering far And I’ll spare a thought for all that you are And I’ll spare a thought for all that you are

In The Rain 03:12
Walking in the rain I’m revelling Walking in the rain remembering Running home to change out of my soaking clothes To little pots of honey Ma warmed on the stove Walking in the rain on gravel roads Walking in the rain from head to toe Splashing through puddles and dreaming of the snow And smelling dinner cooking in other people’s homes Walking in the rain on a mountain Walking in the rain holding your hand Stirring milk powder into steaming cups Our packs are getting lighter and we’ve brought just enough It falls and I can feel my skin The brown leaves glistening The thirsty creek flowing again It falls and everything turns green The tender hope, the wildest dream Can we wash away the false things and the trends? Walking in the rain I’m coming home Walking in the rain, plane’s gonna go I think of my guitar inside the belly of the beast Wondering how I’ve been on the road for seven weeks Walking in the rain Walking in the rain remembering Walking in the rain I’m revelling Walking in the rain remembering

I don't know the rules to games But I remember how I learned your name I looked for ways to make it rhyme Till I knew it just as well as mine Knew it just as well as mine You knew all the words to songs That could show you where your heart belonged You knew there was no part to play So you threw yourself at every day Threw yourself at every day Chorus: Where did you go Where'd you go? You travelled the world around To see what questions could be found And you wanted to save it all So you spoke your heart and stood up tall Spoke your heart and stood up tall Chorus I don’t know the rules to games But nothing’s ever gonna be the same We’re holding flowers now you’re gone And in our hearts you’ll carry on In our hearts you’ll carry on

about

After winning Best Folk Work at The 2023 Music Victoria Awards for her recent album, Into The Blue, singer-songwriter Lucy Wise releases her new acoustic EP, Yearning.

Lucy considers yearning to be one of the deepest emotions humans can feel, and she explores its many forms in this shining handful of songs. She tells stories about how yearning shows up when we lose someone, when we're not loved back, when we're dreaming of our future, or on a walk in the rain.

Yearning has frequented Lucy's songs, and traditional folk songs Lucy grew up singing. Perhaps yearning is always somewhere deep in us - even during moments of joy, a part of us longs for that joy to last, or to come back. For Lucy, yearning is fundamental to her creativity, a thread running through her music.

Produced by Luke Plumb, the EP has a warm, inviting contemporary folk sound that draws on traditional folk, roots and pop music influences. The first track, “Handsome Molly”, is an old time American folk song Lucy has loved singing for many years. Throughout Yearning, Dancing rhythms, playful percussion, soul-stirring strings, piano and vocal harmonies set a vibrant scene for Lucy's moving vocal performances.
